Calina on 15 March 2013, nine days before giving birth to the C litter

Sadly, we have decided it is time to find a new home for Calina – our 6-year-old retired queen.

Queen is exactly the right word, for Calina took charge of our home from the moment she arrived as a 12-week-old kitten, and has been the alpha cat ever since. She was an adventurous kitten and is very clever (e.g. figuring out how to open latched doors!). The other cats all defer to her but she is also loving and gentle.

After she had given birth to six beautiful litters, we decided to spay Calina.

And now, with another female about to arrive, our home is getting crowded and we know that Calina needs to find a new family for the rest of her life. This will be a wonderful opportunity for a family to get a low-allergen Siberian cat without having to wait up to 18 months for a suitable kitten.

If you are interested in adopting Calina, please contact us as soon as possible.

We have only 2 stipulations:

  1. You must love her and care for her as much as we have.
  2. You must commit to keeping her indoors (or in a securely cat-proofed yard) as she has been an indoor cat all her life and would be at extreme risk if allowed to roam. Sorry, but this is non-negotiable.

For more information about this very special cat, please visit the Calina page.

Siberian kitten Michonne, age unknown but less than 10 months.

Great to hear from Michonne’s family in Auckland. Michonne (ex Inka) is a female black/brown mackerel tabby.

I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately; maybe it is because Michonne has been even more affectionate on these colder days; I am truly happy to have my little fluffy girl around me all the time.

She is doing great and getting more beautiful every day; she absolutely LOVES her tall scratching post…. here are some pictures.

Take care,

Here’s another delightful photo of our former Jonty, now Georgy, enjoying life at his new home.

This video is a quick summary of some key points in a New York Magazine article.

Researchers also found that cats use facial expressions to communicate. For example, a slow blinking of their eyes means they are comfortable (with you or another cat).

Check out the article, and here’s a link to some of the research.

And if you find yourself meowing, you may be going a little too far. 🙂

Return of the Kit Cat Clock Wed, 25 May 2016 05:04:51 +0000 Continue reading ]]>

Many years ago a friend gave us our first Kit Cat Clock, but finally its tail ceased wagging. We still looked at the spot on the wall, long after Kit Cat had been consigned to my workshop for eventual rebuilding.

Then, last month, while a friend and I were walking along a street in Ottawa, we chanced upon the Cats R Us store, which carried the full line of Kit Cat Clocks. Naturally I had to get one just like our original model.

Now we’re back on time, with our delightful Kit Cat Clock.

Many people have been asking us: “did you find a home for Juniper?”

The answer, as you can see from the photo above, is “Yes, indeed!”

You may recall that Juniper’s test results showed he was not a very low-allergen kitten (that’s why we always test!) but fortunately he’s just right for his new family in Wellington.

Siberian kitten Georgy with Sophia, April 2016

We were delighted to receive some photos from Michelle and family, who are now sharing their home with blue tabby kitten Jonty from Cici’s J Litter.

Jonty – now known as Georgy – is an extremely low allergen kitten (he had the lowest Fel d1 test result in the J Litter) and has proved to be a hit with the whole family.

Michelle writes:

Here are a couple more pictures of Georgy. He has become Sophia’s baby! He is so very tolerant of being picked up and cuddled all the time – though Sophia is also good at playing with him and we are all astounded at his leaping ability. None of us can resist him. He seems to have bonded with all of us really well.

The six J Litter kittens are all settling into their new homes now, and we’ve been receiving some lovely photos of them.

Featured above is Klaus, formerly known as Jabber, who now lives with Michael and Lauren in Christchurch. He looks pretty mellow, snuggled up against a warm leg. 🙂

Michael writes:

Klaus is getting on really well. He is starting to get extremely playful and tries to sneak outside at every opportunity, but we are managing to keep him in (I suspect he can smell the neighbours’ cats).

My allergies have not been a problem.
